How could we communicate with nature? What if nature around us could express its feelings through human language?
This project began with those questions. By creating translator between nature and human, it presents an opportunity to consider the relationships between us in a more poetic way.

At the Mary headlands, I could feel the energy of the ocean tide. While watching the break of the tides, suddenly it looked like ocean kept leaving its messages written with white water bubbles on the shore. This made me imagine a giant ocean typewriter which is so big that only ocean could use. Starting with this, I gradually find a way how to build a type of machine that interprets ocean waves into human languages.

prototypes developments, 2023

Before making a model, there were some conditions needed to be considered. As the model would be installed in the middle of the shore, it needed to be built with sturdy materials that could endure the force of waves. On the other hand, if it became too heavy, it might not function properly. Therefore, the overall structure was made of hardwood, and additional weight was compensated by placing the actual typewriter on top. In this manner, the water waves could move the pedal, and the wooden finger could press the typewriter keys. Since the joints were not fixed, the wooden finger could freely press across the entire keyboard of typewriter. With these considerations, the ocean typewriter model gradually evolved.

The communication using the ocean typewriter was successful. As the wind moved the wooden finger side to side, it freely pressed the keys, resulting in the ocean leaving a brief message: "6, jfae assj 55037770." Through this project, it suggested how bridging a gap between the primal language of nature and a visible form that humans can decode could be aesthentic.
